Dear foodie, it looks like our wishes have been heard. We’re sharing 3 finger-licking-good desserts that allow us to not only eat but actually indulge our way to beautiful skin! Starting today, with these amazing crunchy, yet creamy Carob Almond bars.
Huh, what is carob?
Carob comes from a pod of a small evergreen carob tree, which is native to the Mediterranean. The long brownish-purple edible pods contain a sweet pulp that is dried, roasted, and then ground into a brown floury powder. That powder is called carob powder and is sold as is or made into chocolate-like chips.
Both the powder and Carob chips are similar in color to cocoa powder and chocolate chips, but their flavor is quite unique. Carob is less bitter than chocolate and has a roasted, naturally sweet flavor. Carob chips are made without added sugar for this very reason.
Carob also happens to be caffeine-free and high in fiber. Yes, this almost nutty flavored super powder is truly fab! We packed all of this goodness into one, very portable, homemade dessert protein bar.
Carob powder and carob chips can be substituted one-for-one for cocoa powder and chocolate chips in all kinds of recipes. The first time that you do this, try swapping in half to get a sense of its unique taste. Another major plus is that Carob chips don’t have the melty quality to them that chocolate chips do.
Nowadays, both carob powder and carob chips are pretty easy to find, stores like Whole Foods carry them, as well as natural grocers.

For those health conscious foodies who’d like to know, we listed some of the major Carob benefits and Carob nutrition below.
*Low in saturated fats – Carob powder contains virtually no fat. Just keep in mind that it’s higher in sugar and carbs than raw cocoa powder. Still, if you substitute carob powder for chocolate chips, you’ll save a lot on fat and calories.
1 cup Carob powder: 51 g sugar | 1 g fat
1 cup chocolate chips: 92 g sugar | 50 g fat

When your body experiences the negative effects of consuming too much sodium, your skin experiences this as well. Skin becomes dry, or it might develop an overproduction of oil as it tries to overcompensate for the dehydration of the skin. This leads to those dreaded breakouts.
*High in fiber – Two tablespoons of carob powder have almost 5 grams of fiber. Why is this good for you?
-You feel satisfied quicker and stay full longer.
-It prevents constipation
-Maintain healthy bowels
-Control your blood sugar
With just 2 tablespoons of carob powder, you’ll get: 0.35 mg Iron | 6 mg Magnesium | 99 mg Potassium
*Gluten-free – Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and triticale. In some people, gluten triggers their immune system to attack the small intestines. If you have celiac disease or are sensitive to gluten, Carob powder is a tasty gluten-free option.
*Caffeine-free – We’re all aware of caffeine being a great pick-me-up-booster, but too much may cause unpleasant side effects like insomnia, nervousness and a fast heart rate, irritability, upset stomach, muscle tremor, breakouts and dehydrated skin.
*Rich source of antioxidants – This super powder contains 24 polyphenol compounds, mainly gallic acid and flavonoids. Wich has anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, and neuroprotective abilities. Antioxidants help to prevent premature skin aging.
